John Murray has opened up publicly in a book about how he trashed his life with a heroin addiction, before rising to become a successful public servant and Illawarra councillor.It is a story too good to sit on, and finally Shellharbour councillor and retired teacher John Murray has put his fascinating life story on the public record.Written under the pseudonym Rex Knowland, Mr Murray has opened up about his life as a bikie with the Comancheros, his heroin addiction, the journey to getting clean and working as a senior manager with the NSW Public Service.He has changed the names of virtually all the characters in the book, and his publisher insisted he do the same as the author.However, he knows he will be recognised in the community and said the most important part was that people learnt from the book.”I’m extremely fortunate, I’ve got a message to pass on and I figured that [writing a book] was the easiest way to do that,” he said.Up until then, people had tried to help me, but I was a capable guy trashing his life.John Murray”I’m not the kind of person who will go on a crusade and talk to the world, but I’ve been given a lot of gifts by a lot of people that are free, and the only obligation to me was to pass it on.
