Very simply, an addict is a man or woman whose life is controlled by drugs. We are people in the grip of a continuing and progressive illness whose ends are always the same: jails, institutions, and death. NA is a nonprofit fellowship or society of men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem.

  1. I think that definition of addiction falls short. Its missing: and your life goes to shit. It is pointless to say adiction is somethong we have no control over without the ‘and my life goes to shit’. I drink coffe everyday and i have no control over it, but my life does not goto hell because of it.

In the context of recovery, to say addiction is lack of control suggests that there is some ‘bigger’ or ‘more fiundational’ human being that maintains control over things all the time’

What allows God or higher power to be the sugnificant factor of recovery is that my life goes to shit because i lost control. Not just that i lost control.

  2. It was not only that my life was controlled by drugs; its that my life was shit. If i had unlimited access to drugs and a home and food, then there is no problem. That is the fact of the situation. The key is labeling anything ‘an addiction’ is that something is wrong.
